abstract [en]: In 2003 UNESCO recognized the White City of Tel Aviv as a World Heritage Site because its nearly 4000 buildings, built between 1930 and 1950, represent a synthesis of the Modern Movement in architecture and urbanism. Although this architecture is attributed to the influence of the Bauhaus, it is not only the German school that the White City can be linked to, but the various modernist experiments that form the basis of International Style. More than stylistic similarities, Tel Aviv’s buildings express in their successful adaptation to local realities the expectation that modern architecture would symbolize the Zionist movement and the building of a socialist grassroots society. Keywords: architecture; White City; Tel Aviv; Bauhaus; International Style.
