Abstract

Based on a literature review, this article seeks to identify how media and information literacy and literacy are present in Brazilian educational policy and to present a proposal for conceptualizing media and information literacy and literacy. To this end, among the results, media and information literacy and literacy is conceptualized from the following aspects: knowing how to be, by understanding and defending the individual as the main part of the communicative, media and informational process; knowing how to do, by excelling in theoretical and technical training and qualification with a view to enabling qualified and responsible media manifestation and production for the media and social networks on the internet; and, knowing how to act, focused on the ethical values that underpin democratic society and which deal with respect for diversity and plurality of opinions, always centered on the veracity of the facts. Finally, we advocate the need to implement public policies that make the population's media and information literacy a reality and that regulate the actions of large media and technology platforms, known as Big Techs, in order to combat disinformation, especially on social networks on the internet.
