Mental health profile of university professors in public institutions in Mato Grosso during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has posed challenges for university professors, increasing the risk of suffering and mental illness.
Objective: To describe the sociodemographic, employment, and mental health profile of university professors from public institutions in Mato Grosso during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Methods: This observational, cross-sectional, quantitative study was conducted from March to July 2022 in the State of Mato Grosso, Brazil. Data was collected using sociodemographic and employment-related questions, as well as the DSM-5 Self-Administered Level 1 Cross-Section Symptom Scale.
Results: A total of 607 teachers participated, with a majority being women (56.18%), adults (70.01%), in a partnership (64.42%), of white ethnicity (62.44%), practicing a religion (77.92%), having children (61.94%), and earning a monthly income of ≥8 minimum wages (68.70%). Most worked in the field of Health Sciences (26.69%), held a doctorate (50.58%), had over 12 years of experience in university teaching (39.21%), and held only one professional contract (83.03%), of which the majority were tenured (72.98%). Over half were classified as overweight or obese (56.51%), sedentary (54.86%), used continuous medication (51.90%), and were diagnosed with a health problem (48.27%), primarily of a psycho-emotional nature (35.91%). The assessment of the mental health profile revealed a high prevalence of positive symptoms of anxiety (83.20%), mania (70.84%), stress (64.09%), depression (61.45%), somatic symptoms (61.12%), anger (57.66%), substance use (54.53%), and sleep disturbances (50.58%).
Conclusion: The mental health profile of university professors in Mato Grosso highlights a concerning situation related to psycho-emotional health, which necessitates the development of support and protective measures for the mental well-being of teachers, thereby enhancing their quality of life.
