Nurses' perceptions on welcoming users with mental health demands treated in primary care.

Abstract

Introduction: Primary Health Care represents the first level of care in the Unified Health System, a service that should guarantee health care including mental health for the entire community.

Objective: to identify nurses' perceptions of the reception of users with mental health demands treated in Primary Care.

Methods: This was a qualitative descriptive study carried out with nurses from 16 FHS units in urban areas in a municipality in the interior of Mato Grosso. The sample comprised 16 nurses, selected for convenience. Data was collected by self-completion of a semi-structured instrument at two points in time, one for collecting the information (January to March 2022) and the other for validating the information recorded by the professionals (May to June 2022), which was then subjected to thematic content analysis.

Results: As a result, there was a predominance of women (87.5%), aged between 31 and 40 (87.5%), white (43.75%) and brown (38%), married (50%). In terms of employment, they were civil servants (75%), working 40 hours a week, with ≥5 years' experience in the ESF (50%). Regarding the length of their training, 62.5% had between <5 and 10 years of training, 81.25% had a lato sensu specialization and 6.25% were studying for a master's degree. In the nurses' perception, the actions defined with regard to welcoming are based on two axes: the way of attending and the way of communicating, favoring the creation of bonds.

Conclusion: In short, in the nurse's praxis, welcoming is considered a technology of mental health care, an effective tool that makes it possible to create bonds and gather information about the social and health needs of service users.
