Suicide for psyache as a social phenomenon in the digital environment of information societies: case study from the latin american bioethics’ perspective

Abstract

Introduction: This research aims to investigate the growing number of completed and attempted suicide and self-harm practices among young people, in view of the fact that the Ministry of Health found that suicide reached the third cause of death among young people aged 15 to 19 and the fourth cause of death among young people aged 20 to 29 in Brazil in 2021. The questions that gave rise to the research arise from the frequency with which the media has addressed the impact of digital environments on the mental health of the contemporary individual and the recurrence of the association of death by self-harm and suicide among young people with situations experienced in cyberspace that negatively reflected on the individual's psychological health. This study is the result of discussions developed in the course "Bioethics and Justice: Minorities and Vulnerable Groups," offered by Professors Dr. Carla Bertoncini and Dr. Luiz Geraldo do Carmo Gomes, in 2024, in our Postgraduate Program in Legal Science at the Universidade Estadual do Norte do Paraná (UENP), located in Jacarezinho, Paraná. The theoretical framework used is Latin American bioethics, addressing the topic through authors such as Débora Diniz, Dirce Guilhem, Volnei Garrafa, Miguel Kottow, and Alya Saada. From these, elements were identified that characterize the need for a local bioethical perspective on issues assessed in our peripheral global space of coexistence. Objective: The study seeks to understand whether suicide in Brazil, based on its social representation as a phenomenon associated with new generations, can be linked to the effects of technological transformations in the context of the information society. Methods: The research method is deductive, based on procedures of bibliographic analysis on the concepts studied in references, data analysis in research on the phenomenon and case study. The case analysis procedure is incorporated into the research to analyze the context of the death of Paulo Cezar Goulart Siqueira, known on the internet as PC Siqueira. Results: It cannot be asserted that the high rates measured by the World Health Organization at an international level and by the Ministry of Health at a national level, nor that all these suicide cases have an absolute and direct influence from interactions in digital media. However, based on the case study of the death of YouTuber PC Siqueira, it can be said that in that context of life, the internet audience was part of the construction of an identity, career building and, later, the destruction of both. Conclusion: The flexibility and penetrability of digital information and socialization networks, as well as working for positive and innovative motivations, are also effective in mental illness, considering that currently the digital environment and social networks function as an extension of a person's life, image, identity and honor, especially when they derive their livelihood from work with the internet.
