Introduction: The off-label use of hormonal implants, especially those containing gestrinone, popularly known as "beauty chip", has expanded among women who seek to lose weight and gain lean mass. However, there is a lack of scientific evidence supporting its safety and aesthetic efficacy, and there are no regulated protocols for this purpose.
Objective: o describe the sociodemographic profile, perceptions, and self-reported adverse effects of women using gestrinone implants for aesthetic purposes, and to assess satisfaction with their use.
Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive, and analytical study was conducted between March and May 2023 with 30 women aged 18–55 years residing in Juiz de Fora, Brazil. Convenience sampling was used, and participants were recruited through social media and aesthetic clinics. A structured online questionnaire, developed by the authors and reviewed by experts, investigated sociodemographic data, motivations, use duration, perceived efficacy, adverse effects, and satisfaction. Statistical analyses were performed using the Chi-square and Mann-Whitney tests (p<0.05).
Results: Participants were predominantly young adults (mean 37.9±10 years), single (46.7%), and with high income (63.3%). The main motivation was body image improvement (43.3%). Adverse effects were reported by 63.3%, mainly acne, hair loss, menstrual alterations, and clitoral enlargement (p=0.033). Despite this, 80% stated the use was “worth it”.
Conclusion: The aesthetic use of gestrinone implants was linked to a perception of benefit despite significant adverse events. These findings highlight the role of sociocultural pressures on body image and underscore the need for stricter regulation and medical guidance.
