Abstract

Introduction: Tracheostomy is an essential procedure in several clinical conditions, providing benefits to patients but also associated with potential complications. Although there is extensive research on the medical technique involved, there is a significant gap in the understanding of the specific knowledge and skills of nurses in this context.

Objective: To analyze the evidence available in the literature regarding the knowledge and skills of nursing professionals in the care of people with tracheostomy.

Methods: An integrative literature review was conducted in the information sources LILACS, MEDLINE/PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and CINAHL, using controlled descriptors combined with the boolean operators "AND" and "OR." After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 13 articles were selected.

Results: The studies show that, although nurses have some technical knowledge, there is a gap between professional training and the confidence needed to provide effective and safe care to patients with tracheostomy. The lack of continuous and specific educational programs was highlighted as one of the main challenges. Investing in the training and updating of nurses is fundamental to promote high-quality care.

Conclusion: There is an urgent need to implement more effective educational strategies, adapted to the needs of nurses. The emphasis on Permanent Education in Health and Continuing Education is essential to improve professional practice and ensure safer and more effective care for patients with tracheostomy.
