About the Journal
Qualis quadrennium (2021-2024): B3 - Journal in Consolidation
The SCIAS Sign Language Journal is an outgrowth of the research project titled "Research and Production of an Electronic Magazine as a Means of Scientific Dissemination in the Knowledge Fields in Education, Art, and Technology." The initiative arose from a partnership between the following research groups: the Center for Studies and Research on Education, Communication, and Technology (NECT) and the Research Center on Knowledge and Education (COED), both from the School of Education of the State University of Minas Gerais (FaE/UEMG). The initial proposal, back in 2012, was to investigate the production of electronic journals as a vehicle for scientific dissemination in the fields of Education, Art/Education, and Technology.
During the research process, COED took more effective actions for establishing the electronic journal and successfully created the virtual publication SCIAS - Art/Education. Subsequently, two more journals were established: SCIAS Journal– Education, Comunication and Technology and SCIAS Human Rights and Education.
There was also a foresight that, in a foreseeable future, specific publications regarding Sign Languages would be released through the SCIAS Sign Language Journal, given the need to fill knowledge gaps regarding Sign Languages worldwide, their linguistic structures, and their diverse aspects.
In 2018, the 1st Symposium on Linguistics applied to Sign Languages was conducted, and, given the outcome of the discussions and ongoing studies, the SCIAS Sign Language Journal felt driven to begin its work. Furthermore, as a result of the Symposium, inter-institutional relationships were strengthened through FaE/UEMG alongside the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais (PUCMINAS), the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF), and the Federal University of ABC (UFABC), thereby establishing bonds between their researchers and the theme of this journal.
The general objective of this periodical is to disseminate studies and research on Sign Languages. Its specific objectives are to: (a) Enable discussions on Sign Languages based on their linguistic structure and subsequent developments; (b) Provide text publishing about SL in various sign languages; (c) Disseminate knowledge and advancements in comparative analyses of Sign Languages; (d) Foster geolinguistic and sociolinguistic discussions regarding Sign Languages, among other areas.
The SCIAS Sign Language Journal was approved in a public call by Editora UEMG at the end of 2021.
Focus e Scope
The SCIAS Sign Language Journal is a scientific publication in an exclusively electronic format by the School of Education of the State University of Minas Gerais. It is managed by researchers belonging to the Center for Studies and Research on Education, Communication, and Technology (NECT/FaE/UEMG) and the Center for Studies and Research on Knowledge and Education (COED/FaE/UEMG), alongside professionals from other UEMG units and partner institutions that make up the Editorial Team.
About the Journal and its frequency
It publishes original articles and is issued semi-annually.
Its first issue was launched in the second semester of 2022.
