Abstract

This article investigates the experiences of Deaf children in different school contexts – inclusive and special education schools – in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte, examining how the presence of Libras influences social interaction and contributes to the strengthening of Deaf identity. The research was conducted through semi-structured interviews with Deaf children of different ages and from various types of schools. The results indicate that the absence of Deaf children at inclusive schools face recurring challenges from na absence of Deaf peers and the lack of fluency in Libras among education professionals, whereas children in environments with Deaf peers show greater satisfaction. The study emphasizes the need for educational policies that ensure Libras as a first language and promote the development of a positive Deaf identity.
