Self-determination for physical exercise: a comparative analysis between active and inactive university students in Santa Catarina

In the university context, where challenges such as high academic demands and routine transitions exist, understanding self-determination for physical exercise is crucial for the development of programs aimed at this audience. Given this context, this study aimed to compare self-determination to exercise among active and inactive university students in Santa Catarina. The study is cross-sectional. A total of 322 higher education students in Santa Catarina participated. Two validated questionnaires were applied to detect self-determination for exercise. The data were not normally distributed, so the difference between the groups (P-practitioners; NP-non-practitioners) was analyzed using the Mann-Whitney test. The results show a significant difference in all basic psychological needs (p<0.000), revealing higher median values for the needs of autonomy [P: 3.75 (3; 4.5); NP: 2 (1.25; 3)], competence [P: 4 (3.25; 4.75); NP: 2 (1.25; 2.75)] and social bonding [P: 4 (3; 4.75); NP: 2.25 (1.25; 3.5)] in university students who practice physical exercise compared to those who do not. There was a significant difference in all motivational regulations (p<0.00). It was concluded that active university students show more self-determination compared to inactive university students.
