Abstract

This article analyzes the contributions of Local History to the teaching of History in Basic Education, based on reflections developed within a teacher training course conducted in the municipal education network of São Caetano do Sul. Grounded in the analytical categories of memory, identity, and territory, the study problematizes the narrative disputes that shape the municipality’s historicity, highlighting processes of silencing and erasure of certain historical subjects in the construction of local collective memory. Supported by historiographical, sociological, and memorial studies, as well as by the use of Oral History as both a source and a teaching methodology, the article discusses the limitations of traditional approaches to municipal history and points to pedagogical possibilities aligned with a critical conception of History teaching. In dialogue with the Municipal Curriculum and the principles of Ethnic-Racial Relations Education, the study emphasizes the challenges and potential of Local History as an epistemological field capable of expanding teachers’ intellectual and didactic-methodological repertoires, contributing to the development of a critical and plural historical consciousness in Basic Education.
