Between the Old and the New Republic
the representations about the History of Brazil on the TV Senado

One of the characteristics of historiography is, fundamentally, its state of constant transformation. The development of new perspectives, influenced by conjunctural paradigms, give new meaning to old objects. As well as the incorporation of new sources and collections, especially in the digital age. Thus, the main objective of this article is to analyze the (re)readings of Brazilian homeland history through the audiovisual production of TV Senado: “Histórias do Brasil” (2017-current). Inserted in an interface between Public and Political History, we seek to contribute to the understanding of representations about the country and its political elites through the analysis of the content of this production, prepared by the official broadcaster of the Brazilian Legislative. For this, we restrict our thematic focus to the Proclamation of the Republic and the Revolution of 1930, events that directly influenced the formation of the Brazilian nation and its relationship with the past. Establishing dialogues with the concepts of Centralism and Federalism, we seek to elucidate how both remained on the agenda in public and political debates, albeit in the light of different ideas and meanings. Thus, through a brief historiographical discussion, we started with the empirical analysis of the source, aiming to understand the importance of the public production of these narratives and which matrices were mobilized in this construction.
