A COBRA FUMOU NO ESTADO NOVO: A FORMAÇÃO DA FORÇA EXPEDICIONÁRIA BRASILEIRA E A ENTRADA DO BRASIL NA SEGUNDA GUERRA MUNDIAL (1939 - 1945)

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the formation of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force (FEB) during the years following the Estado Novo dictatorship. Given that the formation of the Expeditionary Force took place during the years of the Estado Novo dictatorship, it was crucial to investigate the perpetuation of Getúlio Vargas in power through a coup d'état. In addition, relations between Brazil and the United States were also of paramount importance for understanding the reasons that led Brazil to send active civilian men to the Italian theater of operations. In this way, the Good Neighbor Policy adopted by the US governments was considered and analyzed. The return of the expeditionaries and the consequences of the war years on their lives are also mentioned. The main aim of this article is to detail the formation of the FEB and its impact on Brazilian society. To this end, the analysis of historical documents, such as periodicals from the time, the 1999 documentary film Senta a Pua! and the memoirs of the soldier Joaquim Xavier da Silveira, Cruzes Brancas (1997) were essential. Finally, it was possible to conclude that the formation of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force served national economic interests and that the political class did little to reintegrate the soldiers into Brazilian civil society.
