Project Geology for All: a successful initiative for the popularization of science

Introduction: The importance of mineral resources in society has taken mineral research to unprecedented levels. As a result, access to geoscience museum collections went from simple visits to interactive activities, where knowledge went from theory to something much more tangible for an avid public that had little or never contact with this area of knowledge
Objective: To disseminate and popularize geosciences through technical visits with interactive activities to the UNIFOR-MG mineralogy museum, of mineral research in the municipality with undergraduate students.
Methods: Cataloging the UNIFOR-MG museum collection for technical visits; Research and collection of minerals in the municipality of Formiga-MG and surroundings; Exchanges of samples with
universities; Lectures and traveling exhibitions; Creation of an image bank; Confection of didactic collections for donation to educational institutions and museums; Production of scientific articles; Dissemination of activities in the media; Geological fields.
Results: The reorganization of the mineralogical collection created an interface between the community and the museum, where an easy-to-understand language was used, with field days for students (Geological Saturday project), mineral collections, lectures, donations of didactic collections. Exchanges and publications in various media. A Digital Atlas of the collection was created, publications in mineralogy forums, acquisitions of minerals through exchanges, donations and purchases, publication of three scientific articles, participation in congresses. The file on the General Geology of the municipality of Formiga, available on the web, was formatted.
Conclusion: There is interest on the part of the community in quality information. Professionals from different areas wish to be better grounded to perform their functions involving mineralogy. This project has proved its immense potential, social and scientific value, and the time to be given for it to be consolidated must be much longer than the recommended duration, since it involves a profound social and habits transformation.
