Assessment of knowledge of mothers and/or guardians regarding child vaccination

Abstract

Introduction: Childhood vaccination is an effective measure in preventing vaccine-preventable diseases and is one of the main health promotion actions offered by the country's public health system. However, it is important for mothers and/or guardians to understand the relevance of childhood vaccination and its positive effects in order to ensure adequate adherence to the complete vaccination schedule.

Objective: to assess the knowledge of mothers and/or guardians about childhood vaccination in a vaccination room in the interior of Minas Gerais.

Methods: This is a descriptive, quantitative study to be conducted by collecting data through a sociodemographic

questionnaire. The data collected were described using the Content Validity Index to validate the instrument developed, and simple descriptive analysis. All ethical aspects were respected, respecting the recommendations of Resolution No. 466 of 2012, which provides for research involving human beings

Results: The results of this study were presented in two stages. The first stage consisted of changes suggested by the Committee of Judges in relation to the questionnaire on the knowledge of mothers and/or guardians regarding childhood vaccination, which showed a high level of agreement among the judges. The second stage involved applying the instrument to mothers and/or guardians of children aged zero to 1 year, 11 months and 29 days.

Conclusion: Based on the results found, it was possible to observe that the majority of the population studied has good knowledge about the childhood vaccination schedule, but still has difficulty in relating which pathologies certain vaccines confer immunity to. In this context, since this is a relevant topic for public health, it is necessary for managers to carry out health education practices, aiming to improve the knowledge of this public and consequently raise awareness about the importance of childhood vaccination.
