Cross-cultural adaptation of an assessment instrument for functionality after head and neck cancer treatment to Brazilian Portuguese

Introduction: Head and neck cancer and its therapies can significantly impact the functionality and health of patients. It is crucial for professionals to be attentive to possible structural and functional impairments, activity limitations, participation restrictions, and environmental and personal factors that influence the patient's context. Objective: The aim of this study was to perform a cross-cultural adaptation, into Brazilian Portuguese, of an assessment instrument for functionality after head and neck cancer treatment. Methods: This was a methodological study conducted in four stages: translation, synthesis, back-translation, expert committee review, and pre-testing. Two bilingual translators, whose native language was Portuguese, translated the instrument into Portuguese and participated in the synthesis of the translation. Subsequently, two translators whose native language was English performed the back-translation. Content validation was conducted by a committee of ten professionals, who assessed the semantic, idiomatic, cultural, and conceptual equivalences of each item in the instrument. The pre-test of the adapted version was conducted with a sample of 40 patients. Results: In the translation, three discrepancies between translators were identified, which were resolved during the translation synthesis phase. The two back-translations confirmed that the Portuguese version accurately reflected the content of the original version. In content validation, the average agreement among evaluators was 95%. After the pre-test, adjustments were made, resulting in the Brazilian version of IAFCCP-br. Conclusion: The IAFCCP-br was adapted for the Brazilian context after cross-cultural adaptation.
