Support network for caregivers of children and teens with cleft lip and palate

Abstract

Introduction: The cleft lip and palate are congenital malformations that require treatment for a long period of time. People in these conditions and their caregivers may face situations that require a support network to help them with their experiences, with the aim of avoiding psychological, relational, financial and social problems.

Objective: The cleft lip and palate are congenital malformation that require treatment for a long period of time.

Methods: Exploratory, qualitative study, conducted in a reference center in the Western region of Paraná, Brasil, through semi-structured interviews, with 14 caregivers, between June and November 2023. One of the qualitative analysis approaches called Thematic Analysis was used to interpret the data.

Results: The participating caregivers were 12 mothers and two fathers, aged between 21 and 46 years, whose children were aged between 3 months and 15 years, nine of whom were diagnosed with cleft lip and palate, six boys and three girls; three with cleft palate only, of which one boy and two girls; one boy with cleft lip. Through the qualitative analysis, the thematic categories emerged: Family support network, that adressed the subtopic: fragmentation of the family support network in the face of adverse situations, adverse situations and strengthening of the family support network, and changes in the daily routine and support receive; abdication of professional life and financial support; professional support network.

Conclusion: The family support network presented itself prominently for the caregivers, that provided support and assistance on the daily routine, emotional and financial support. The professional support was adressed as important, especially regarding the reception and health attention. Although, it’s important to strengthen the profissional support network to families in all dimensions, including the elaborations of a care plane for those (caregivers) who find themselfs also in a fragile situation.
