Abstract

This article examines the comic book Far Sector (2019–2021), written by N.K. Jemisin and illustrated by Jamal Campbell, through an initial reading of its Afrofuturist elements. The narrative introduces Sojourner “Jo” Mullein, the first black and queer Green Lantern, whose trajectory symbolizes the opening of new horizons within an established canon. Set in a futuristic city governed by the Emotion Exploit, a device that regulates the emotions of its inhabitants, the work explores metaphors of control, dissent, and future. By combining cyberpunk aesthetics, political questioning, and black protagonism, Far Sector brings together Afrofuturism and cultural critique, projecting alternative possibilities of existence and imagination. In this sense, the comic stands as a landmark in the dialogue between pop culture and Afrofuturist narratives, highlighting the power of black subjectivities in the construction of other futures.
