Abstract

The first exhibitions of industrial design in museum spaces defended the importance of the activity of designers for national economy and sought to create a consumer public to new objects mass produced according to the precepts of “good design”. Clara Porset, when realizing “El arte en la vida diaria” in Mexico City in 1952, was trying to convince industrialists to industrially produce functional and aestheticaly pleasing objects, respecting the mexican tradition of creating useful and beautiful artifacts, as a way of reducing costs, making contact with art in everyday life accessible to the entire population. This paper gives an overview of the exhibition, featuring its participating exhibitors and designers.
