Abstract

The article analyzes natural disasters on a global and regional scale, with a specific focus on Brazil and the state of Santa Catarina, during the period from 2018 to 2022. Using data from international and national sources, the research examines the occurrence and impacts of climatic, hydrological, geological, and meteorological phenomena. The study highlights the vulnerability of populations and the effectiveness of disaster responses, considering factors such as infrastructure and population density. Santa Catarina recorded the highest number of events in Brazil, while Bahia and Pernambuco had the largest numbers of affected individuals. In Santa Catarina, the city with the highest number of events was Mafra, with heavy rainfall being the most frequent event in the state. The research also compares natural disasters in other countries, such as the United States, India, and Indonesia, emphasizing the disparities between the number of events and the magnitude of their impacts on affected populations. The study underscores the importance of investments in resilient infrastructure, early warning systems, and mitigation programs to reduce the devastating effects of these phenomena. Successful disaster management examples from countries like Singapore and Norway are discussed as references for Brazil and other developing nations. The results of this study contribute to the development of effective public policies and strategies for adaptation and resilience, providing a solid foundation for future disaster prevention and response actions.
