Abstract

This article investigates the motivations underlying the formation of an emotional bond between women and clothing, as well as the effects of attachment on the longevity of these products’ life cycles. Through a systematic review based on the PRISMA method, 18 articles were identified that discuss the attributes fostering long-lasting emotional attachment and how surface design is addressed in this context. As a result, it was possible to establish connections among the findings across four dimensions that shape attachment to clothing: symbolic and identity-related; aesthetic and sensory; care and acquisition; and functional and practical. However, although the importance of the aesthetic dimension in eliciting attachment is acknowledged, few studies examine the specific role of pattern design in this relationship.
