Abstract

This article discusses cartonero books as an expression of an escatological design and as a possibility of a design to come, articulating environmental crisis, material waste, social precarity, and cultural resistance. Drawing on the emergence of cartonera publishers in Latin America, with emphasis on Eloísa Cartonera and Dulcinéia Catadora, it argues that the reuse of cardboard and the inclusion of waste pickers in the editorial process destabilize social and material hierarchies. In dialogue with Tim Ingold, Donna Haraway, Danowski, and Viveiros de Castro, the text proposes understanding cartonera practice as an entanglement of relations and as a practice of growth, capable of restoring flows of life interrupted by the linear and hegemonic logic of capital. It concludes that cartonero books constitute an aesthetic, ethical, and political practice that reactivates discarded materials, narratives, and subjects, pointing toward other ways of making and inhabiting the world.
