Abstract

Phraseological units are part of the field of Lexical Sciences and correspond to combinations of words whose meaning is not reduced to the sum of their elements, being built from the articulation between their forms and their uses in specific contexts. In this sense, the present article aims to identify and categorize the phraseological units present in the work Tocaia Grande (2008 [1984]), by Jorge Amado, analyzing how these expressions, in their forms and uses, contribute to the construction of the narrative and the atmosphere of the work, as well as for reflections in the context of interfaces between Linguistics and teaching. To this end, a qualitative approach was adopted, of an exploratory nature, focusing on the identification, cataloging and analysis of the phraseological units present in the novel. We selected 30 units to compose the sample, of which 5 were analyzed in more detail. The results show that Tocaia Grande presents a wide repertoire of phraseological units, which go beyond the communicative function and act as fundamental expressive resources in the construction of meanings, characterization of characters and representation of the sociocultural context. It is concluded that the study of these units, by considering the relationship between forms and uses, contributes not only to the understanding of the literary work, but also to the development of teaching practices that value the cultural, social and interpretative dimension of language.
