This study aims to analyze the educational challenges facing the social, economic and geographic limitations of Distance Education (EaD) and the inclusion of this modality in Brazilian Higher Education. For this, it starts from the premise of discussing about the brief history of distance education, legal bases, and its social relevance as a requirement for promoting the democratization of knowledge and access to quality higher education. Methodologically, bibliographic and documentary research was used, supported by books, scientific articles, institutional repositories and platforms, and national and international websites, revisiting the main theorists in the area, therefore, it is a qualitative research. We conclude that Distance Education plays an important role in enabling, through virtual learning environments, there is an expansion of teaching, in which students can share significant and dynamic learning, making them the protagonist of their education, in addition, new actions are also pointed out to strengthen this modality.
