Abstract

This paper aims to make a comparative analysis of an adapted text, contained in didactic material for teaching English as a Foreign Language, and its original, published in a newspaper with wide circulation worldwide. The analysis has the theoretical-methodological support of Systemic-Functional Linguistics (LSF), which sees language as a system of choices that are conditioned by context. In addition to being a linguistic base, the LSF enables the analysis of linguistic patterns of the language, making it possible to contrast the linguistic choices made in the two texts. Regarding the reading, we share the vision of written comprehension as an emancipatory practice, responsible for the formation of critical and autonomous readers. The reflections emerging from the analysis show that the differences are possibly made to feed the reader's prior knowledge, given that the original version was published in the country of the fact described in the text and, therefore, its readers already had prior information about it. There is also a subtle difference in the choices of types of processes, in terms of the LSF, being more descriptive and stative in the adapted version.
