Abstract

The eradication of smallpox is celebrated as a triumph in the fight against infectious diseases, despite the initial challenges faced by the WHO campaign. There is speculation about how the spread of misinformation on social media would have negatively impacted the campaign in the 1970s, highlighting the importance of regulating public health information. This is contrasted with the situation experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the challenges posed by the anti-vaccine movement and fake news about immunizers. The need for education, trust in science and regulation of information to tackle pandemics and eradicate diseases is emphasized, while warning of the dangers of disinformation on social media.
