A Erradicação da Varíola e o Desafio das Fake News Científicas: Lições do Passado para o Presente.

A erradicação da varíola é celebrada como um triunfo na luta contra doenças infecciosas, apesar dos desafios iniciais enfrentados pela campanha da OMS. Especula-se sobre como a disseminação de desinformação nas redes sociais teria impactado negativamente a campanha nos anos 70, destacando a importância da regulação da informação em saúde pública. Isso é contrastado com a situação vivenciada durante a pandemia de COVID-19, destacando os desafios representados pelo movimento antivacina e pelas fake news sobre os imunizantes. É enfatizada a necessidade de educação, confiança na ciência e regulação da informação para enfrentar pandemias e erradicar doenças, enquanto alerta sobre os perigos da desinformação nas redes sociais.
